__Pro Bono
In addition to clinical work in law school and early career litigation through Legal Aid, I have continued to support and perform pro bono work in three ways:
•    Service-equivalent donations:  I donate annually an amount recommended by the State Bar Association to an organization that provides legal services to those who need but cannot afford it.
•    Pro Bono representation:  I will consider representing a client without charge, and am just completing a one-year representation in two related prisoner rights cases in federal and state court actions.
•    Pro Bono dispute resolution:  Facilitating settlement through mediation or serving as an arbitrator without fee is another means through which I provide pro bono service.

Bar Associations
In addition to participating in numerous bar associations, I have long served in leadership positions in local, state and national bar associations.  Examples include:

•    National: Member of Federal Bar Association and ABA; Member of the ADR, Environmental and Litigation Sections of the ABA; Member and past vice-chair of the Dispute Resolution Committee of the Section on Environment, Energy and Resources of the ABA; Presentations at national conferences of the ABA  SEER and ADR Sections, and at a Federal Bar Association District Bench-Bar Conference.

•    State: Chair-Elect of the Environmental Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan; Past Secretary-Treasurer of same; Past Membership Committee Chair and Section Council Member; Member of Dispute Resolution and Litigation Sections; Member of State Bar Association of New York; Presenter on Environmental and Dispute Resolution topics.

•    Local: Founding member and past chair of the Environmental Law Section of the Grand Rapids Bar Association; Past chair of the ADR Section of the Grand Rapids Bar Association; Member of the ADR Committee of the Grand Traverse-Leelanau-Antrim Bar Association.
